Appearance Vs. Reality (Hedda)

I think appearance vs. reality is the most interesting theme in this book. I mean really nothing is as it seems with this characters. For example Hedda always wants to appear in control, she wants to control the people around her, she wants to be able to do and get what she wants when she wants. She tries so hard to fight the idea of males in control. But she can't and that's when we see her FINALLY take control by ending her own life. She didn't know what else to do and since she didn't see any other way other and she couldn't bear look into change or the future for the answer she "quit" while she could. So while Hedda may seem to be a strong character she really is not, and in the end she may be considered the weakest character in the book, because everyone else has at least a little control. The whole time she works so hard to appear in control until reality catches up with her.

I strongly agree with your statement that "nothing is as it seems with the characters". You make a good point that Hedda is constantly fighting against the idea that males are the ones in control. Furthermore, I also view Hedda as one of the weaker characters. As much as she tries to appear in control, she remains subordinate to many of the others. Her suicide is the ultimate representation of her surrender and realization of her reality.

You've got it girl! Everything in this play is twisted. Thea seems weak but in reality she is very courageous and moves beyond societal boundaries. On the other hand, Hedda appears to be in control for a while but she gives up her front and reveals in a conversation with Lovborg how she is truly a coward at heart. Even ignorant, powerless Tesman has power in actuality. He is the money maker which during this time makes him the power taker. Lol ok that was lame but you get my drift.
